Speed on smooth pavement, secure handling on loose ground, commuting through the city, uphill and downhill... Gravel bikes are made to be fun in every situation. Currently trending is bikepacking, which means multi-day trips with a bike, tent, and sleeping bag. We've designed many parts of our gravel clothing specifically for this type of cycling and tailored them from the ground up to meet the demands of your overnight adventure.

Why? Quite simply, we ourselves had long been captivated by the feeling of freedom on a gravel bike! Fast miles on asphalt, freedom on dusty gravel roads, and plenty of adventure on flowing trails had sparked a new passion in us beyond our mountain biking obsession. From MTB nuts, we became Graveliers. It quickly became clear to us that there was a lot of catching up to do with clothing for this new, exciting biking discipline, because neither the casual mountain bike attire nor the skin-tight road bike lycra suits this type of cycling –a very special gravel outfit was needed! Alongside our own experiences, tips from fellow gravel and bikepacking riders provided numerous ideas that helped define special requirements for a gravel clothing line. From the drawing board straight to the sewing machine, here's what we've come up with.

What makes Platzangst gravel clothing so special?

But since you're out in public and not in the gym, you naturally want to look good on your tours. Function and style, both are absolutely possible—even despite sweat-inducing exertion in all weather conditions.

The function of a gravel bike outfit

Clothing for gravel bikers must first and foremost function well and be comfortable in every riding position. We are revising our Edits repeatedly, in addition, we pay attention to the selection of the Materials that they are suitable for sportswear.

  1. As always with cycling clothing, gravel bike clothing must also transport moisture from the fabrics to the outside. On the surface, it must be as dry off quickly so you don't get cold.

  4. For the cuts in our gravel collection, we opted for a mix of body-conscious yet casual styles decided. This way, you have enough freedom of movement to sit actively on the bike, yet still flutter your gravel jersey and your gravel pants hardly at high speeds. 
  5. From our mountain biking apparel, we know no different: The garments must robust and resilient be. We have naturally incorporated this aspect into our gravel bike clothing. Our Gravel Shorts, Gravel Jerseys, Jackets, Socks and Caps are made from a durable material to accompany you on your gravel adventures for a long time.
  6. Like all sportswear, our gravel apparel is also well washable and dries quickly. This way, you don't have to pack tons of clothes; you can quickly freshen them up on the go.
  7. On a gravel or bikepacking adventure, it's not always just sunshine and warm temperatures. Whether you're caught off guard by a warm summer rain or a downpour in the cold autumn, it's important that while gravel riding, you have a waterproof outermost layer of clothing is available. Why gravel clothing, why not road bike or MTB gear?

A gravel bike is (depending on its equipment) a cool mix of road bike, MTB, and everyday bicycle. So why not just wear the corresponding styles? You could head out in casual mountain bike clothes or sporty road gear! But neither is quite right for bikepacking and gravel tours.

The biggest mistake would be to go on a longer tour in everyday clothing because that can be incredibly uncomfortable on a bike, and with each mile ridden, it becomes more of a torment. The reason is simple: "Normal" clothing is made for a person standing upright. But on a gravel bike, you're not standing or walking upright – you're sitting and pedaling.

  • Cycling shorts adapt to the sitting position. This means there's enough space at the rear and around the knees for bent legs. So the shorts don't pinch or constrict.
  • Another important point is the seams; especially in the seat area, they would chafe mercilessly. That's why cycling shorts have no seams in this area, or the seams are particularly flat and soft so they don't rub.
  • Also, tops for cyclists need a special cut. After all, you need to reach the handlebars, so you need a lot of room at the shoulders and long sleeves. Gravel bike jackets, jerseys, and shirts take this into account.

Gravel bike clothing simply takes the best features of other cycling clothes and combines them optimally to provide perfect function for long, relaxed tours. It's durable and robust like mountain biking gear, and also offers similarly many pockets, accesses, and ventilation openings. Gravel clothing is also highly functional in terms of cut and fabrics, making it just as suitable for hours of pedaling as a road bike kit. Its appearance is closest to sporty casual wear without chafing seams, fabrics that constrict, or sleeves that are too short, of course. Gravel Clothing in Winter and Rain
